Priest’s Sexual Abuse
PRIEST’S SEXUAL ABUSE
Have you seen the 2015 movie about Boston Globe’s 2002 expose’ of 87 priests and their 1,000 victims? Here are some examples:
“There was the Jamaica Plain mother who invited the Rev. John Geoghan into her home for years, unaware he was molesting her three young sons in their beds. And the Salem boys who were enticed by the Rev. Joseph Birmingham to take trips to the ice cream shop, only to be molested by the priest in his car”. You know that this was not your fault. You don’t deserve feelings of guilt, shame, depression or anxiety. Your anger is understandable but it won’t take you very far. Neither will self-medication.
How do I practice self-care?
Maintain your lifestyle. Do what you enjoy. It is important for your emotional wellness.
Make plans. Make plans that give you a break from talking or thinking about the assault- a new hobby, dinner with a group of friends who understand, long walks.
Take time to relax. Consider meditation or deep breathing exercises. Start a journal.
Reach out and talk about it. Call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800.656.HOPE (4673) or visit at rainn.org to chat with someone who understands what you’re going through. You can also consider talking to someone who is trained professionally to help you deal with these thoughts and feelings, like a mental health professional.
